St. Augustine said that when singing, people pray twice. We usually participate, prayerfully, in the Sung Mass at 10:15 am each Sunday from September to July, by singing in the Choir/Organ Loft at the back of the church (We try to arrive a few minutes before Mass starts); accompanied by our very talented Director of Music, Maria Hall, on the three-manual organ, sometimes also with added instrumentals, timpani, cymbals, etc. We practice every Thursday (again, September to July) from 7:30 pm to 9 pm,
Your ability to read music is a help, but not necessary as existing members can help by singing alongside. Beside the Psalm, we sing three or four hymns per Mass, partly in unison (Melody only), and partly in SATB where possible. Hymn books, with lyrics and score are provided. Ours is a fun choir -Maria makes our singing into a fun exercise, and we celebrate our work occasionally by going out for a meal. Although choristers are urged to attend both Mass and rehearsals regularly, we do understand that sometimes absences are unavoidable.
There is a very good speaker in the Loft, so no one needs to miss any part of the Mass (easier to hear in the loft than in the congregation, perhaps...). There are 29 steps, with handrail to help any who are a bit unsteady.
